Hiking from Gudauri to Kazbegi and Gergeti: trekking and gear

From Gudauri to Kazbegi is about one hour along the Georgian Military Road. For most tourists it is a separate day trip or part of a larger Georgian tour. The main target is Gergeti Trinity monastery (2,170 m) with views of Kazbek (5,047 m): the route from the village takes 2-3 hours one way with about 800 m of elevation.

For those wanting more, there is the Kazbek base camp route (3,600-3,800 m): 2-3 days, more serious gear and physical preparation are needed. Gergeti is a classic that can be done in sport trainers in dry conditions. Kazbek requires hiking boots, poles, layered clothing and possibly a guide.

For Gergeti: hiking boots or sturdy trainers, water (at least 2 litres per person), a wind layer and sun protection. The route is well known and you can hike without a guide, but always tell someone your route and return time.

For Kazbek base camp: hiking boots with high ankle support, poles, a warm sleeping bag, tent or camp hire, and communication. On days 2-3 you need crampons, ice axe and avalanche gear.
